Polymer Clay Jewelry
For most of my work, I use Sculpey Premo polyclay because it is very strong once baked and can be mixed to create a paint box of colors. I will add other clays if I need other characteristics., such as, Fimo for transparent colors and Sculpey Bake and Bend for elasticity. Most of my work, take many hours to complete. This is a challenging and rewarding art medium and my work is evolving.
Some of the techniques used have been adopted from old world techniques:
1) Caning- rolling clay to create design; once sliced the design is revealed throughout
2) Milliefori- a technique used in Venetian glass to create flower designs throughout the glass and now
adapted to polyclay for intricate designs
3) Mogume game- a Japanese metal working technique for surface design. In polyclay, the design is revealed by distorting the clay. Thin top layers are removed revealing the new design
